The Tragic Finger

Thursday night we went to our piano/spanish lessons at the Marshall's house. After the lessons the girls all went off playing while Bret helped Jeff fix the car. I was making dinner and heard Alaina come in the house screaming all kinds of screaming. I looked at her cradled hand and saw that it was scratched up a bit, so I took her to the bathroom and washed it up. When Emily came over to put the bandaid on it I noticed it had turned black and blue and was beginning to swell. Then I noticed Eden and her uncontrolable crying. I asked her if she was hurt too and she said (very dramatically, crying and sobbing) "No! Im the one who hurt Alaina! Im the one who dropped the rock!"
Uh...rock?
So I asked Eden to show me what happened.
Well, this is what happened. They have this on going game called "Rock Quarry" where they break little rocks with bigger ones. They were setting up a little piece of brick to be smashed to bits with a huge rock, when Alaina decided she needed to move it at the same time Eden dropped said huge rock. It hit Alaina's finger against the other rock and crushed it.

I have never seen Eden so sad, she really didnt mean to hurt her friend.
Especially the day before their piano recital. You know, that one they have been practicing for months for?

We knew it was hurt and bruised pretty bad but didnt think it was broken so we didnt take her to the doctor that night. The next morning I took the bandaids off and noticed it had gotten worse. Thats when I took these photos.

It looks bad here, but as went went through the morning it was getting worse and worse. That little purple spot at her knuckle was black, like seriously black, and it was getting this weird shine to it. It also started to swell all down her hand and knuckles. So I decided to take her to the urgent care. I kinda wish I would have taken pictures of it at its worst. haha

The doctor thought it was broken and ordered x-rays.
Alaina was so good and brave.

The x-rays showed there was no break, thank goodness. So she was "diagnosed" with a "crush injury". Which basically means that everything in her finger that isnt bone was severely injured.
They splinted it. Alaina screamed and cried so much the nurse was shaking and the doctor had to come back in to help. But really, it hurt. They had to straighten it to get in on the splint, which really didnt feel good for Alaina. We have to wait until it isnt swollen to check the tendons. Hopefully they are fine.

We went to her recital anyway to support her awesome teacher and friends. I asked her if she wanted me to play the right hand and she could play the left and we practiced it a bit. It sounded ok, but she didnt want to do it and I couldnt convince her.
But I did convince her to try to play it with me after everyone left. I just wanted her to try and to play on this beautiful grand piano!
She did. It was fun.
I was proud of her anyway.

Im still thinking to myself,
what horrid timing!
